TRANSPLANT PHASES AND TECHNIQUES

Phase One: Checks

Prior to transplantation, various checks are performed according to the patient’s situation, blood tests, electrocardiogram, blood pressure checks, and everything else needed to ensure a safe and comfortable transplant for the patient.

The health of the patient, ensuring the health of the operating team, and the health of subsequent patients is our priority.

Second step; defining transplant areas

The specialist, together with the patient, decides on the areas for transplantation and reconstruction of the frontal line. Normally, the limit of the frontal musculature is defined, from which the patient’s natural line is derived. The frontal line reconstruction is performed in a zigzag pattern, to give a natural effect.

Phase Three: Harvesting

In all transplantation techniques the harvesting phase is the same. The donor area is defined, a shave is performed, then compressed air anaesthesia without puncture, also known as painless anaesthesia, then local anaesthesia is applied. Using a micromotor, the bulbs are harvested. They are selected in groups of 150/200 to be counted. They are then immersed in isotonic fluid to keep them alive. The harvesting phase can last from 2 to 4 hours. After this phase, the patient takes a break of about 30/45 minutes to have lunch.

Fourth phase: Transplantation

At this stage, transplantation techniques differ in FUE Sapphire (Follicular Unit Extraction) and DHI also known as CHOI pen. Currently the best technique in the world is DHI, but in exceptional cases the specialist may opt for the FUE technique or combine the two techniques together.

Local anaesthesia is used as in the harvesting phase and then in the FUE technique. The specialist opens the microchannels with a scalpel with a sapphire tip. The Sapphire tip is used because the microchannel is opened with minimal invasiveness and great precision. In a second step, the bulbs are inserted one by one.

While the DHI technique, a technology developed in South Korea at Kyongpook National University. The bulbs are inserted into these special ‘pens’ and with a click the microchannel is opened and the bulb graft is performed. The depth of all bulbs is in the correct area under the skin, a minimally invasive technique. Healing and recovery times are better than any other technique. Bulb loss is minimal.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON TRANSPLANTATION

After transplantation, the donor area is bandaged for one or two days. On the third day, the first flush is continued.

The patient is prescribed and given the necessary post-transplant medications, and the doctor or a counselor gives all useful instructions to follow post-transplant. The patient is followed 12 months by our counselors to monitor the development of the transplant, or a visit to our centers in Italy can be arranged. Each patient’s development is different; individualized care is prescribed for each patient.

How many bulbs can be transplanted in one session?

We do transplants from a minimum of 1000 bulbs. Our specialists, if needed, do the maximum harvest directly, harvesting the maximum number allowed by the donor area, without spoiling it. Up to and over 6000 bulbs can be transplanted in one transplant, regardless of technique, which is a huge advantage for the patient, as they are not forced to choose one technique over the other. The DHI technique is slightly more demanding than the FUE technique, as a rule specialists do not perform a transplant beyond 5000 bulbs, we have performed transplants even beyond 6500 bulbs.

Can transplanted hair be lost?

As a rule no, the side and nape areas have different genetics than the area where hair is lost, which is usually subject to androgenetic alopecia. Hair transplantation brings the genetics of strong hair back to the transplanted areas with minimal risk of hair loss.

Can there be rejection of transplanted bulbs?

It is almost impossible for there to be a rejection, the risk is less than one in a million.
